Will This Make Me Stop Using Splenda?

Splenda

As health conscience as I am most of the time, I'm sometimes embarrassed that I use the artificial sweetener, Splenda.

From the early claims that Splenda is actually a derivative of sugar, so it is healthy, I sort of accepted that statement figuring that anything that has been chemically altered in any way probably has some health risks. But now I have been hearing lately that Splenda causes cancer. Is this enough to make me stop using it?

Most of us who use artificial sweeteners - Splenda, Sweet-n-Low, Equal, Stevia and others typically use them to reduce our caloric intake. Of course there is the knowledge that sugar is generally bad for us and we should keep the intake to a minimum. We could of course go the route of organic sugar but the caloric content is the same as processed sugar.

The cancer claims regarding Splenda are starting to gain some traction. If you Google it, you will find supporters and detractors of this claim. Supporters say that it is the chlorine that is toxic and causes problems. Detractors say that if you go behind these claims, you will find sugar lobbyists who are trying to scare people away from Splenda because it is taking a sizable chunk out of their industry. Of course, when any new product comes onto the market, it can take years for studies to render results of research.

So is the research on Splenda returning results of health being compromised by the use of Splenda? Are these legitimate claims or is there some outside group trying to send consumers of Splenda and other artificial sweeteners running back to sugar?

If the cancer claims were proven to be 100% accurate, would you still use it? Or do you feel that mostly everything we consume has something wrong with it so why stop using this particular item? What do you think?
